Working with nature, not against it
We now care for over 140 Irish Moiled cattle and their wellbeing is central to everything we do. Our Moilies spend at least 260 days of the year outdoors, roaming freely in fresh air and open space. Around a third are housed during winter months, while the remainder are outwintered, allowing them to continue grazing naturally where conditions allow.
It’s not unusual to see our Moilies grazing along the North Coast, making use of conservation-rich landscapes such as Benone, Castlerock, and Magilligan, as well as the salt marshes of the Roe Estuary Nature Reserve. These varied environments support both animal health and biodiversity.
As farmers, we’re committed to preserving the land for future generations and passing it on as a thriving, balanced ecosystem. We are gradually transitioning our grassland to biodiverse mixes of native plants, better suited to soil health and wildlife. Alongside this, we’ve planted new hedgerows, widened field margins, and taken active steps to protect waterways and woodland.
We are also reducing our environmental impact by lowering fertiliser use and slurry production, focusing instead on more natural systems. This is an ongoing journey — we’re excited to see where it might lead.
